　　Haunted by the memory of Walter Holderlin, a soldier he killed during World War I, French musician Paul Renard (Phillips Holmes) confesses to a priest (Frank Sheridan), who grants him absolution. Using the address on a letter he found on the dead man's body, Paul then travels to Germany to find his family.　　As anti-French sentiment continues to permeate Germany, Dr. Holderlin (Lionel Barrymore) initially refuses to welcome Paul into his home, but changes his mind when his son's fiancée Elsa identifies him as the man who has been leaving flowers on Walter's grave. Rather than reveal the real connection between them, Paul tells the Holderlin family he was a friend of their son, who attended the same musical conservatory he did.　　Although the hostile townspeople and local gossips disapprove, the Holderlins befriend Paul, who finds himself falling in love with Elsa (Nancy Carroll). When she shows Paul her former fiancé's bedroom, he becomes distraught and tells her the truth. She convinces him not to confess to Walter's parents, who have embraced him as their second son, and Paul agrees to forego easing his conscience and stays with his adopted family. Dr. Holderlin presents Walter's violin to Paul, who plays it while Elsa accompanies him on the piano.　　The film's original title, The Man I Killed, was changed to The Fifth Commandment to avoid giving "wrong impressions in the minds of the public about the character of the story." It ultimately was released as Broken Lullaby.

　　Sir Karell Borotyn appears to have been killed by Count Mora, a vampire believed to haunt the local village. Now his daughter Irena is the count's next target. Enter Professor Zelen, an expert on vampires who's sent in to prevent her death. At the same time, secrets are revealed surrounding the circumstances of Sir Karell's death.

　　After seventeen years in prison, the former respected Parisian banker Paul Lavond flees with his friend, the lunatic scientist Marcel that is researching with his wife Malita the miniaturization of animals and human beings to improve the resources of mankind. Paul Lavond was framed for robbery by his scoundrel associates Emil Coulvet, Charles Matin and Victor Radin that had stolen his business while his family was doomed to shame, poverty and tragedy. When Marcel reduces the retarded servant Lachna, he learns that the woman is motionless and only responds to the control of his brain and has a heart attack. After the death of Marcel, Paul Lavond sees the chance to use the miniaturization process as instrument of vengeance and he travels to Paris with the insane Malita disguised of Madame Mandilip, a nice old lady and owner of a dolls store. Paul Lavond, using the identity of Madame Mandilip, befriends his resented and estranged daughter Lorraine Lavond and plots a scheme to revenge and vindicate his family name.

　　巴黎风尘女郎玛格丽特约见华维尔男爵却与青年亚芒认识。后俩人在书店相遇，玛得知亚芒每天送花探病，深受感动邀其参加生日宴会。亚芒见她强颜欢笑更加怜惜，遂对她示爱。当晚男爵回来亚芒吃了闭门羹，懊悔之余斥责她无情，请求父亲资助他出国旅行。玛赶去见他并互吐心意，玛同意和男爵分手随他到乡下调养身体。亚芒父亲劝玛放弃亚芒，玛因真心爱亚芒，为其着想，骗亚芒与其分手。几个月后亚芒与男爵及玛在赌场相遇，不料亚满大赢，叫玛随他走，玛拒绝，亚芒盛怒之下加以侮辱，并与男爵决斗，男爵受伤，亚芒畏罪潜逃。玛深爱亚芒，却拒绝任何资助，病情加重，待亚芒了解真相玛已撒手人寰。

　　在柏林的一家大饭店里。那时整个德国笼罩着经济危机的阴影。在豪华的大饭店里麇集许多来自不同阶层的人物。其中有陷入困境而避风头的财界巨擘普莱辛格，无奈色衰而想自尽的芭蕾舞演员格鲁辛斯卡娅，被赌博弄得倾家荡产而偷窃为生的旧男爵冯盖根，普莱辛格的旧属风烛残年的孤老克林格兰，以及年轻漂亮但贪婪自私的速记员弗兰苓等。　　这部第5届奥斯卡最佳影片是米高梅在30年代初期首创“全明星电影”的代表作。全片以柏林的一家豪华大饭店为人生舞台，表现五组人物在同一天之中的离奇遭遇。叙事手法虽然中规中矩，但几位大明星的表演却相当精彩，充分掌握角色的个性和处境，其中有：面临事业危机的俄国芭蕾舞女星、嗜赌的男爵、患上绝症的小人物、企业家等。这些角色以三线交错的方式上演着人生的悲欢离合，剧情发展流畅，场景虽然局限在大饭店中，但人物穿梭流动自然。故事在后来的《柏林饭店》（Hotel Berlin）和《琼楼风月》（Weekend at the Waldorf）中再度出现，并被改编成百老汇歌舞剧。

　　舞女伊迪和好朋友离开小镇到大城市谋求发展，吸取母亲的人生教训，伊迪认为金钱比爱情重要，立志要嫁个有钱人，某次舞会上，大富豪TR老先生无意间帮助伊迪摆脱一场命案的谋杀嫌疑，于是她决心追求这位老先生把他钓上钩，与此同时，一个年轻的服务员也盯上了这个美丽又有趣的年轻女郎……

　　故事描述华尔街巨子卡比为了赚钱而有意将工厂扩展到住宅区，但遭该地范德霍夫家族强烈反对。范家成员个个性情古怪，次女爱丽丝并在卡比公司担任秘书，又和卡比的儿子托尼相恋，引起卡比的不满。双方的纠纷最后由德高望重的祖父居中调解，卡比也变成乐善好施的慈善家。　　改编自获得普立兹奖的百老汇舞台剧，采用喜剧手法宣扬新睦邻的主题，在三十年代面对经济不景气打击的美国老百姓因而感受到人际温情和生活希望，使这部洋溢着乐天思想的影片勇夺当年金像奖最佳影片奖殊荣。导演弗兰克．卡普拉以其一贯兼具讽刺性与娱乐性的手法拍出人情世态的微妙冲突，莱昂内尔．巴里莫尔、琪恩．阿瑟、詹姆斯．斯图尔特等演得也成功。
